Jorge Rodriguez

Jorge Rodriguez

I had interviewed an amazing community hero named Jorge. Throughout his childhood and teen years Jorge had faced some challenges including his parents’ divorce and the death of a close friend. Today Jorge is helping troubled kids like he was around Chicago for a non-profit organization called B.A.M.(Becoming a Man).

In the interview Jorge said that “education is the key ingredient for what you want to do.”which means that to achieve a goal in life you have to have education. if you drop out of school you can’t get anywhere in life but, Jorge never dropped out and has accomplished many goals like getting married, getting a good job, and having kids.
Jorge works for B.A.M. an organization to help boys throughout their high school life as well as their home life. Now I am in B.A.M. and he makes it fun while we are learning great life lessons and B.A.M. has gotten me through my freshmen year in high school. Jorge says that the hardest thing in his work is “That you just have to sit back and watch the kids make their mistakes.”

Jorge has been a victim of violence his whole life because his dad was an alcoholic and his friend got killed because of a drive by shooting. His friends were so into drugs that one of them tried to jump him. One idea that jorge has on youth violence is that “kids in gangs aren’t bad kids. I don’t think there is such a thing as a bad kid just bad examples.”

Jorge said that the first trait to being a hero is “Perseverance because you have the ability to take anything from anybody because you can take it.”When i called Jorge a community hero he said that he felt shocked and honored being a community hero because he didn’t expect being a hero by hanging out and helping kids.
