Lilliana Diaz

Liliana has one child and with her free time (if she ever has any) she enjoys watching movies.Shes sees almost every new movie, for example the most recent one she has seen was Godzilla. She sees potential in everybody, even the worst of the worst and she tries to help them change their ways. She grew up in Humboldt Park and  attended Northwestern University.

She works with LSNA  (Logan Square Neighborhood Association). She enjoys what she does there, which is to work with youth and it is what inspired her to go back to college and study to be a teacher.

She thinks education is really important because thats how you actually learn more about yourself. She said that in college you get to pick your own classes that interests you and you can find yourself in your own education.

Liliana's opinion towards issues affecting our cities is the fact that there is lots of racism that still exist today “When you look at the percentage rates of people going to jail its always from black and Hispanics,”  she explains. She also feels there is a lack of resources in selected communities. She has experienced various events in her life, especially, from her job but the event that stood out to her the most and that she will never forget was when she went to go talk to Congress about immigration.  She took various Hispanic kids with her and they were being rude to them calling them “wetbacks” and other racial expressions saying “go back to your country.”  Liliana said, “no matter what they said, no matter how much they were talking about us,we didn't reply negatively , it just showed how strong we are“.
She believes a hero is someone who makes a stand for those people who are afraid to make a stand for themselves. A role model to her was her mother as a child. “I've always looked up to my mother seeing all that shes been through.“
