Maria Trejo

Maria Trejo has two daughters and works at the Logan Square Neighborhood Association. She became pregnant at the age of 19. During her free time she enjoys spending time with her daughters.

Maria is looking to become a teacher in the coming years. She currently works at Ames Middle School and enjoys helping out the community. She loves her job and working with families and kids.  When talking about her job, she says that she is, “trying to guide them to a positive path” and enjoys ”bringing them resources to their school.”

Like a lot of people, Maria thinks education is important. “You use/need it everyday. It helps out, a lot,” is her view on education. Maria does a lot for the community. She works with kids, families, and teachers. Shes an important person within our community.

Maria and the other people in the community were fighting to keep Ames as a community school that is open to the public. The Board of Education wanted to convert Ames into a military academy and also into a selective enrollment school. If they ended up doing that then a lot of other schools were going to be affected by it and Ames won't be a neighborhood school anymore. Unfortunately after three years of fighting to keep Ames as a community school, they lost. So next year Ames is going to become a military selective enrollment school.

After this happened she stated, “Young people should get involved in the community, take what the school offers… be activists.”  She believes that the Board of Education cares more about what the youth are saying then what the adults are saying.  Lastly, she thinks that students in our community need to be more involved in the neighborhood and that the youth violence must come to an end
