Beto De Freitas was the community hero I interviewed along with Armando,Cindy, and Juan. Beto is a dreamer and as simple as that sounds it’s not. He has a vision for the world. He teaches kids to have a voice,to respect themselves, and to believe in themselves. He’s very passionate with what he does. Beto is not only a dreamer,he’s a believer that if we work together we can make this world into something beautiful.
- “You learn something new everyday, you face something new everyday.”
Beto's kids go to a CPS school. He feels that all the teachers, staff have great potential to do the right things for students. However, he feels that CPS and board directors are going down the wrong path for the wrong reasons. Coming to a school and learning how to take a test just so you’re guaranteed to go to college or get a job, that does not equal education, in his opinion. The path CPS is going down right now it does not guarantee that you’ll make it, it guarantees that you become apart of the system, that you can have a job, so you can pay the bills. Again, that does not equal happiness.
- “My people are very committed to new things, they accept social change.”
Beto talked about his community in Brazil with so much pride in his voice. His people and community is very committed to social change,to teach people how to believe in themselves, how to teach people how to trust themselves, how to better themselves, and by doing that they hope people can have a strong voice at work,at school, in their community and in their family.
- “Education can be a good key component on fighting against the violence we see today.”
Thankfully violence has never affected beto’s life directly more like indirectly because he works with kids that are victims of violence, they are surrounded by violence 24/7 and it does affect him greatly more emotionally than physically. Beto thinks that education can be a good key component to fight against the violence that we see today.
- “An easier way to look at someone who is a hero is a firefighter or a police officer, a doctor…”
Beto thinks to be a hero someone has to claim being one. That someone has to really give up something of great value to save that someone or something. He thinks the sacrifice this person goes through is extraordinary and making someone’s life better and saving them. Do I think beto is a hero? In a sense yes I do because he helps kids with their problems, he builds them up when others are putting them down. So yes, I do think he’s a hero because he gives up his time and he works hard for the happiness of others.
